A couple of my students displaying their homemade guitar.

Friday we spent some time making some music. As apart of our study of how resonance works, we created instruments that make noise due to the resonance they put off. The video above displays a simple guitar that we made using a meter stick, fishing line, and a milk jug. When the fishing line is strummed it gives off a vibration that travels through the milk jug, once that vibration enters the jug it then causes the jug to vibrate itself and create its own distinct sound (resonance).

Friend of the blog Lafayette slaps the bass and explains how it works.

The same thing goes for this bass that Laf has created. Vibrations enter the bucket which cause the bucket to vibrate and make a noise. On Monday, we will shift gears as we move music and begin to focus on electromagnetic waves.
