And we’re back! It’s been a long time since we were last in school, but after a much needed spring break we are ready to take on the last quarter term of school and finish this school year strong!

Way back on March 18th (before spring break), my science students began a studying lights and optics. Before we started this optics unit, we set the table by discussing the electromagnetic spectrum and more importantly the visible light portion on this spectrum. On the 18th, students were given light boxes and slides with which they used to mix various colors by using shadows. In the picture above, two of my students are using the box to mix various colors.

Students also discovered that they could create effects with their shadows by using different colored slides and mixing the colors together. In the picture above, Lauren and Julia mixed three different colors together and ended up with three different colored shadows.

With their light boxes, these students were also given various lenses and shapes to play with and study the effect that they have on visible light. In the picture above, a group of my first hour students use a triangle to separate the colors of the visible light spectrum.

This impromptu lab that we conducted before spring break, merely served as an introduction to the optics unit we will be beginning this week. On Monday, we will continue to look at optics and conduct more structured lab experiments using our lenses, color slides, and light boxes. Have a great Monday!
