My Arkansas History students are currently learning about the 1957 desegregation of Little Rock Central High School here in Arkansas. In 1957 Little Rock Central took center stage as a country watched 9 African American students fought for their right to attend an all white school. This process was not easy and required action from the president and the Army before they were able to attend school.IMG_0104In an attempt to keep track of all the important dates and events of the civil rights movement and The Little Rock Central Crisis my students have been constructing a time line. Students were given various events that are from the Central Crisis and other important dates during the desegregation process. This project was designed to give them an understanding of what exactly happened and why desegregating one school was such a chore.

Students were also given the choice to construct their time line using Timetoast…such as the one above (omit the mistake of Johnson signing a bill in 2010). We will continue to discuss the events of the Central Crisis along with the current standing of Central.

  1. I really enjoyed this post. Is was neat to see that other students are using the Timetoast time line program in the classroom for school projects. I see that they made a draft first as a guide (or as a display to have in the classroom, then published it to Timetoast. It is great to see media being used for all subjects such as history, english, art, and literature. I am with Dr. Strange’s EDM310 class at South Alabama.
