Shepherd, Sarah Elizabeth Ray, Bob-Lo Company.  In the case of  Bob-Lo Excursion Co.  v. People of the State of Michigan, the Canadian company that owned Bob-Lo island wouldn’t let an African-American high-school student, Sarah Elizabeth Ray participate in a school outing to the amusement park, they wouldn’t let her ride the ferry to the island because they have a strict ” No colored or disorderly people allowed”  policy. In 1948 Detroit, Michigan and the offenders location was, Bob-Lo In Ontario, Canada. this case was brought to court because it was against  Michigan’s Civil Rights Act. The company was fined $25. THe company also appealed the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, asking them to hold the state’s civil rights act unconstitutional. They got thier life jackets and went to the upper decks and took chairs. It wasn’t until later when Devereaux, the appealents assistant general manager, and a steward by the name of Fox told them that Miss. Ray couldn’t go on the trip because she was black. At first she refused to leave because it was discrimination, which was illigal in the state of Michigan acording to   but when they threatened to remove her forcably she agreed to leave. They took her to the ticket office and offered to return her fare but she refused, took their names and left company property. There is no evidence showing that she or any members of her group showed any miss-conduct, plus theres not any dispute concerning the facts.

  1. This DOES look awesome – nice job! I love it when things are “hidden” in a prezi – you did this very effectively. I’m from Michigan (I remember the Bob-Lo boat!) and I had never heard of this court case. Thank you for teaching me something about my home state today!
